Today’s Thought
Luke tells us that when the Samaritan saw the wounded man, “he took pity on him”. He had compassion.
Compassion means another person’s need is allowed to matter to us
Colossians 3:12 tells us, “as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion…” That means compassion is not merely a feeling we wait to have. It is part of the character Jesus is forming in us.
Jesus modeled this repeatedly. Matthew 9:36 says that when He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them.
We can ask Jesus to form that same heart in us
Today, don’t only pray, “Jesus, show me who needs help.” Pray, “Jesus, help me care about what You care about.” When Jesus changes our hearts, people stop being interruptions and become people worthy of our attention and love.
Pray
“Jesus, clothe me with Your compassion. Soften the places in my heart that have become hurried, indifferent, or judgmental. Help me care about the people You care about. Amen.”
Today’s Mercy Step
Think of one person whose situation you have noticed but have kept at an emotional distance. Pray specifically for them by name, and ask Jesus to give you genuine compassion for what they are facing.
Following Jesus by loving the people right in front of us…or next door,
