James 1:26-27

Week 3: Tuesday

Today’s Scripture

James 1:26-27

This Week’s Memory Verse

“…who (God) comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:4 NIV

Psalm

Psalm 34:18 NIV

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Proverbs

Proverbs 20:5 NIV

“The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.”

Today’s Thought

James warns that religious words mean little when our speech and actions contradict them. He describes genuine religion in terms of both personal integrity and care for people in distress. That sounds a lot like Isaiah 58. Our worship and our weekdays belong together. A person may never hear our prayers or see us reading Scripture, but they will experience how we speak to them and whether we take their pain seriously. Mercy begins with a heart that belongs to God and becomes visible in the ordinary ways we treat people.

Pray

“Lord, help my devotion to You shape my conversations, my priorities, and my response to people who are hurting. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN.”

Today’s Mercy Step

Pay special attention to your words today. Replace criticism or impatience with one intentional expression of compassion.

Following Jesus by loving the people right in front of us…or next door,
